Solstice to Invest $220M in Virginia Ballistic Fiber Plant

Solstice Advanced Materials announced on January 13 that it will invest more than $220 million to expand its ballistic fiber manufacturing facility in Colonial Heights, Chesterfield County, Virginia. The project is expected to create 100 jobs by 2029.

Spectra fibers for armor

The investment will increase capacity for Solstice’s Spectra and Spectra Shield ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibers, used in helmets, vests, vehicle armor and naval and industrial applications. Solstice is upgrading and installing advanced manufacturing equipment and expanding facility space. Construction and equipment installation began in May 2025, with completion anticipated by September 30, 2030.

State grants

Governor Glenn Youngkin approved a $2 million Virginia Investment Performance grant and a $1.5 million Commonwealth’s Development Opportunity Fund grant for the project.

David Sewell, President and CEO, Solstice Advanced Materials said:

“Our ballistic fiber technologies play an essential role in protecting service members and first responders across the country.”

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin said:

“Their ballistic fibers help protect those who protect us, and this growth reflects the strength of the Commonwealth’s talent.”
