Canadian Solar Opens Jeffersonville, Indiana HJT Solar Cell Plant and Plans 6.3 GW Phase II

CS PowerTech, the U.S. manufacturing subsidiary of Canadian Solar, has opened the first phase of its heterojunction (HJT) solar cell plant at the River Ridge Commerce Center in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The company is now moving ahead with a second phase that will bring the site to 6.3 GWp of annual cell capacity.
First U.S. HJT cell factory
The Jeffersonville facility officially opened on July 24, 2026 and is the first American PV cell plant designed to produce HJT bifacial N-type solar cells. Phase I has a nameplate capacity of 2.1 GWp. Cells from Jeffersonville supply CS PowerTech’s module factory in Mesquite, Texas, creating a more vertically integrated U.S. supply chain.
Phase II adds 4.2 GWp
Canadian Solar said it will start installing Phase II equipment before the end of 2026 and expects trial production in the first quarter of 2027. The expansion adds 4.2 GWp, bringing total U.S. cell capacity to 6.3 GWp. At full capacity, the facility is expected to support more than 1,200 manufacturing, engineering and technical jobs and represent nearly $1 billion in local investment.
Rusty Schmit, President of CS PowerTech said:
“Jeffersonville is a cornerstone of our strategy to build one of North America’s most advanced energy manufacturing supply chains. This facility will produce next-generation HJT solar cells, support domestic manufacturing, and ultimately strengthen grid reliability as our customers deploy the products.”
Colin Parkin, CEO of Canadian Solar said:
“The Jeffersonville facility demonstrates our commitment to scaling one of the world’s most advanced solar cell technologies in the United States.”
