U.S. Steel Approves $3B Hot Strip Mill at Mon Valley Works

U.S. Steel announced on October 22, 2026 that its Board of Directors approved full funding for a nearly $3 billion investment in a new hot strip mill at the Mon Valley Works – Edgar Thomson Plant near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Capacity rising to 3.5 million tons

The new mill will replace aging equipment with modern technology, increasing annual production capacity from approximately 2.2 million tons to approximately 3.5 million tons and expanding the range of steels the company can produce. New walking beam furnaces and an in-line slab sizing press will reduce waste, fuel use and scrap.

Construction will begin after permits are received, with initial production expected in late 2029. The investment is expected to generate up to $1.7 billion in economic impact over three years. It follows earlier commitments made under the U.S. Steel–Nippon Steel partnership.

Serving automotive, appliance and line pipe markets

David Burritt, President and CEO of U.S. Steel said:

“This nearly $3 billion investment is about making sure that story doesn’t just continue but gets even stronger. We are bringing world-class technology to the Mon Valley, creating new capabilities for our customers, and strengthening American steelmaking for the next generation.”

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said:

“This nearly $3 billion investment in the Mon Valley will keep thousands of jobs here in our Commonwealth and create real opportunity for future generations of Pennsylvania steelworkers.”
