AbbVie Expands API Production in Illinois

AbbVie, a research-driven biopharmaceutical company, has unveiled plans for a $195 million expansion to construct a new active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) facility at its North Chicago, Illinois campus. The project, slated to break ground in late 2025, aims to bolster domestic production of APIs, which are essential for developing advanced medications. The new facility is projected to create around 70 high-paying jobs, primarily in specialized manufacturing and technical roles. This expansion will enhance AbbVie’s capacity to meet the rising global demand for innovative therapies. According to CEO Robert A. Michael, “This investment is a critical step in maintaining U.S. leadership in pharmaceutical innovation, ensuring we can deliver next-generation medicines that transform patients’ lives while contributing to the economic vitality of Illinois.”
