Hitachi Energy to Build Large Power Transformer Plant in Virginia

Hitachi Energy's $457M Virginia Expansion

Hitachi Energy announced a $457 million expansion of its South Boston, Virginia, facility on October 3, 2025, creating 825 jobs. By 2027, it will be the largest U.S. site for large power transformers, meeting demand from renewable energy and data centers. The plant will use advanced automation to produce high-voltage transformers. CEO Andreas Schierenbeck said, “Transformers are vital for a reliable grid and AI growth. This strengthens the U.S. supply chain.” Supported by Virginia, the project includes workforce training to support the energy transition.
