Toyota Announces $8 Billion Additional Investment in North Carolina Battery Plant

Toyota's $8B Boost in NC Battery Plant

Toyota Motor North America has revealed plans to invest an additional $8 billion in its Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina (TBMNC) facility in Liberty, bringing the Japanese automaker’s total commitment to the plant to nearly $13.9 billion.

The massive expansion, announced in early October, will add eight new battery production lines (for a total of 14) dedicated to both hybrid and pure-electric vehicles. The investment is expected to create more than 3,000 additional jobs, pushing total employment at the site to over 8,000 when fully operational by 2030.

The Liberty plant, which began production in April 2025, will boost its annual capacity to support batteries for up to 800,000 vehicles. Toyota cited strong U.S. demand for electrified vehicles, federal incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act, and North Carolina’s growing clean-energy ecosystem as key reasons for the accelerated investment.

“This historic expansion underscores Toyota’s long-term commitment to electrification and to building a sustainable future in America,” said Norm Bafunno, senior vice president of Toyota’s North American unit production engineering.

The announcement reinforces North Carolina’s position as a leading hub for EV battery production, with the state already home to major facilities from Toyota, VinFast, and Arrival. Construction on the new lines is slated to begin immediately.
