Eli Lilly Invests Over $6 Billion in Huntsville API Facility (Alabama)

Eli Lilly's $6B Huntsville API Facility Investment in Alabama

Eli Lilly and Company has announced a significant investment of over $6 billion to build a next-generation synthetic active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) plant in Huntsville, Alabama. Spanning 100 acres, the facility will create 450 high-value jobs and approximately 3,000 construction positions. The plant will focus on manufacturing small molecule and peptide medicines, including Lilly’s oral GLP-1 candidate, orforglipron.

David A. Ricks, Chair and CEO of Eli Lilly, emphasized that Huntsville’s strong history in science and advanced manufacturing made it the ideal location for this expansion. “Huntsville’s track record of science and innovation, supported by advanced manufacturing expertise and a skilled workforce, makes Alabama an ideal location for Lilly to expand domestic manufacturing capacity for next-generation medicines,” Ricks said. The new facility also strengthens the U.S. supply chain for pharmaceuticals, ensuring more reliable access to medicines for patients across the country.
