AbbVie to Build $1.4 Billion Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Campus in Durham, North Carolina

AbbVie Plans $1.4B Pharma Manufacturing Campus in Durham

AbbVie announced on April 22 a $1.4 billion investment to build a 185-acre pharmaceutical manufacturing campus in Durham, North Carolina, near Research Triangle Park. It is the company’s first major investment in North Carolina and its largest capital investment to date.

734 jobs

Over the next four years, AbbVie plans to hire 734 people, including engineers, scientists, manufacturing operators and laboratory technicians. Campus development is expected to generate more than 2,000 construction jobs. Construction begins in 2026, with completion expected by the end of 2028.

Immunology, neuroscience and oncology

The campus will integrate advanced manufacturing and laboratory technologies with AI to support production of AbbVie’s immunology, neuroscience and oncology medicines. The first phase includes small volume parenteral (SVP) drug product manufacturing facilities, next-generation laboratories, a warehouse, administrative offices and employee wellness facilities.

State support

The project is supported by a Job Development Investment Grant approved by North Carolina’s Economic Investment Committee and is part of AbbVie’s $100 billion commitment to U.S. R&D and capital investments over the next decade.

Robert A. Michael, Chairman and CEO, AbbVie said:

“Our investment in North Carolina represents a significant milestone for AbbVie as our largest capital investment to date and an important expansion of our manufacturing footprint into a new region of the United States.”

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein said:

“We welcome AbbVie’s major investment to North Carolina. When you combine our world-renowned research and innovation with a strong, thriving life sciences hub, North Carolina quickly becomes the premier location for biopharmaceutical companies to do business.”
