ACT-ion Opens Cathode Material Pilot Plant in Carrollton TX

ACT-ion Battery Technologies, Inc. has celebrated the grand opening of its pilot plant at 1200 Tappan Circle in Carrollton, Texas. The fully commissioned facility is ready to produce cathode active materials (CAM) for lithium-ion batteries in the United States.

Tenfold increase in capacity

The plant uses ACT-ion’s proprietary ACT-ivate process, a clean, continuous, chemistry-agnostic manufacturing method designed to reduce the cost, environmental impact and production time of battery materials. The facility raises the company’s capacity tenfold to 20 tons per year. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Materials & Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO) and Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) support the pilot plant scale-up.

Mark McGough, CEO of ACT-ion said:

“Officially opening our doors today is proof that the vision we shared a year ago is now reality. This facility increases our capacity 10 times, to 20 tons per annum, making it the largest all-American phosphate-based CAM producer in the USA.”

Flexible feedstock and chemistries

ACT-ion has demonstrated the process across lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) materials and is applying it to lithium manganese iron phosphate (LFMP) and sodium-ion battery materials.

Jin Lim, Founder and CTO of ACT-ion said:

“One of the most powerful advantages of our ACT-ivate technology is its unprecedented feedstock flexibility. We incorporated lower-cost domestic inputs like industrial-grade chemicals and recycled black mass, allowing us to reduce costs while delivering the high-quality materials the market demands.”
