ArcelorMittal Breaks Ground on $1.2 Billion Electrical Steel Facility in Calvert, Alabama

ArcelorMittal's $1.2B Steel Facility in Alabama

ArcelorMittal, a global leader in steel production, has announced a $1.2 billion investment to build an advanced non-grain-oriented electrical steel (NOES) manufacturing facility in Calvert, Alabama. The state-of-the-art plant, wholly owned by ArcelorMittal, will produce up to 150,000 metric tons of NOES annually, supporting automotive, renewable energy, and industrial applications, including electric motors and generators.

The project is expected to create up to 1,300 jobs during construction and more than 200 permanent positions. “We recognize the importance of creating a resilient, sustainable domestic supply chain for this critical material,” said John Brett, CEO of ArcelorMittal North America. The facility, supported by a $135 million U.S. Department of Energy award, will reduce U.S. reliance on NOES imports.

Construction is set to begin in the second half of 2025, with production anticipated to commence in 2027. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey praised the project, stating, “This investment strengthens Alabama’s steel industry leadership and drives innovation in electric vehicle and renewable energy technologies.” The Mobile County Commission and Mobile Chamber also endorsed the initiative, highlighting its economic benefits for the region.
