First Solar Opens $330M Solar Module Plant in Gaffney, SC

First Solar opened its new solar module facility in Gaffney, South Carolina, on October 28, celebrating the first phase of production at what will become a 3.4 GW plant.

1.7 GW now, 3.4 GW by mid-2027

The $330 million facility starts with 1.7 GW of annual capacity. The second phase is expected to be complete by mid-2027, bringing capacity to 3.4 GW.

Nearly 700 jobs

First Solar has already filled 500 jobs at the facility and expects to add nearly 200 more as it reaches full production.

Onshoring Series 6 Plus finishing

The plant onshores final production processes for Series 6 Plus thin-film modules started at First Solar’s international facilities.

Mark Widmar, CEO of First Solar said:

“Less than a year after we selected Gaffney, this facility is ready to produce American solar technology, built by South Carolinian workers. That pace reflects what is possible when sound policy, strong state and local partners, and a committed workforce align.”
