Genentech Breaks Ground on $700 Million Manufacturing Facility in North Carolina

Holly Springs, NC – August 25, 2025
Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, has begun construction on a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Holly Springs, North Carolina, marking its first production site on the East Coast. The $700 million, 700,000-square-foot facility is part of Roche’s $50 billion commitment to U.S. manufacturing, infrastructure, and R&D. It will focus on producing next-generation metabolic medicines, including treatments for obesity, and is expected to create over 400 manufacturing jobs and 1,500 construction jobs.
The facility, set to be operational by 2029, incorporates advanced automation and digital technologies for high-volume, sustainable production. Located in a biopharmaceutical hub, the 100-acre site allows for future expansion. Genentech CEO Ashley Magargee emphasized the region’s skilled workforce and robust infrastructure as key factors in the decision. The groundbreaking event was attended by local leaders, including Governor Josh Stein and U.S. Representative Deborah Ross, highlighting the project’s economic significance.
