GlobalFoundries Selected to Operate Two New Semiconductor Fabs in Malta, New York Under U.S.-Japan Initiative

GlobalFoundries to Run Two New Japan-Funded Fabs in New York

GlobalFoundries announced on October 14 that it has been selected to operate two new semiconductor fabs at its site in Malta, New York, under a U.S.-Japan initiative funded by Japan’s investment commitment to the United States.

Up to $21 billion from Japan

Reuters reported that Japan will invest up to $21 billion in the two factories, which will be run by GlobalFoundries.

Thousands of jobs

New York officials said the project will create thousands of construction jobs and support more than 1,000 highly skilled manufacturing jobs.

A first-of-its-kind initiative

Tim Breen, CEO of GlobalFoundries said:

“This is a bold new initiative for semiconductor manufacturing, bringing together the United States and Japan with GF’s differentiated technology and decades of manufacturing expertise to accelerate trusted capacity in New York. GF was selected because fabs of this scale require more than capital. They require differentiated technology, operational excellence and a proven ability to execute.”

Building on Fab 8

Grant McEwan, general manager of Fab 8 at GlobalFoundries said:

“Since 2009, the people of this site have built one of the nation’s most advanced semiconductor manufacturing operations. These two great countries entrusting GF to operate two new fabs is a powerful vote of confidence in our workforce, our technology and New York’s Capital Region.”
