GSK to Invest $800M+ in Upper Merion, PA Biologics Hub

GSK will invest more than $800 million to expand its site in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, Governor Josh Shapiro announced on October 9. The project will create a biopharmaceutical innovation and manufacturing hub that combines commercial production, R&D and advanced digital capabilities at a single site.

More than 300 new jobs

The expansion will create more than 300 new jobs over the next five years and retain approximately 4,500 existing full-time GSK jobs across Pennsylvania.

New biologics factory

Following demolition of existing buildings, GSK will construct a commercial-scale biologics manufacturing facility for clinical and commercial supply, a co-located R&D pilot plant, and a centralized quality control lab and manufacturing science and technology (MSAT) hub. Construction is planned to begin in 2027.

Nearly $1.7 billion in Pennsylvania

This is GSK’s second major Pennsylvania expansion after its $800 million investment in Lancaster County.

Regis Simard, President, GSK Global Supply Chain said:

“Investing in additional commercial and R&D manufacturing with advanced digital capabilities at our Upper Merion site will help accelerate the development and supply of future medicines for patients.”
