Lam Research Breaks Ground on New R&D Lab in Tualatin, OR

Lam Research held a ceremony on August 26 at its research and development center in Tualatin, Oregon, to mark the start of construction on a new 120,000-square-foot lab, the first milestone in a more than $3 billion planned investment in its global lab network over the next five years.

50% more cleanroom space

The new facility is expected to increase cleanroom lab space at the Tualatin R&D center by more than 50%, adding capabilities for advanced deposition and etch process development, materials science and hardware validation. It is projected to open in 2028.

Jobs

The lab is part of a planned multi-building expansion at Lam’s Tualatin campus. Once completed, the expansion is expected to be Lam’s biggest investment in Oregon to date, creating more than 400 new Lam jobs. Construction is expected to support about 900 jobs.

State support

Lam received $22 million from the Oregon CHIPS Act in 2024 to support the expansion.

Sesha Varadarajan, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Lam Research said:

“Our new advanced Oregon lab is expected to deepen our specialized capabilities and add tens of thousands of square feet of valuable cleanroom space, enabling even closer collaboration with customers while strengthening the expertise and reach of our global lab network.”

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek said:

“Today’s groundbreaking signals strength in Oregon’s economic future.”
