Project Type: New Plant
LG Energy Solution Starts Production at Lansing, Michigan, Battery Plant Supplying Tesla

LG Energy Solution announced on August 18 the start of production at its all-new, 226-acre battery plant in Lansing, Michigan. The facility builds battery cells for both energy storage systems and electric vehicles.
LFP cells for Tesla Megapack 3, NMC for Toyota
The plant produces lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) cells for energy storage systems and will also produce nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cells for Toyota, including for the 2027 Toyota Highlander EV. In March, the U.S. Department of the Interior said Tesla and LG Energy Solution had signed a $4.3 billion supply agreement for LFP cells from Lansing to power Tesla’s Megapack 3 systems produced in Houston.
1,700 jobs at full capacity
The plant aims to reach more than 35 GWh of annual capacity. Since 2022, LG Energy Solution has invested more than $2 billion in the facility, which employs about 900 people and is expected to grow to 1,700. The project began as Ultium Cells, a joint venture with General Motors, before GM sold its stake in 2024.
David Kim, CEO, LG Energy Solution said:
“Today marks a defining milestone for LG Energy Solution. Lansing will produce advanced batteries that support not only the future of mobility, but also America’s growing energy infrastructure and digital economy.”
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said:
“This project will create up to 1,700 good-paying jobs, helping more working families make it in Michigan.”
