Micron Technology’s Monumental $200 Billion Push to Reshore U.S. Chip Manufacturing

Micron's $200B U.S. Chip Reshoring Initiative

Micron Technology announced on June 12, 2025, a $200 billion investment to expand U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and R&D, driven by the CHIPS Act, geopolitical tensions, and AI demand. This reshoring effort aims to reduce reliance on Asian production and address global chip shortages.

Key sites include two new fabs in Boise, Idaho, for advanced DRAM; up to four in Clay, New York, for AI memory; and upgrades in Manassas, Virginia, for NAND flash. Federal grants total $6.2 billion plus $275 million for Virginia. The project, spanning a decade, will create over 90,000 jobs and boost U.S. tech security.

Challenges include workforce shortages and costs, but it positions Micron for leadership in memory tech.
