Project Type: New Plant
Saab Opens $115 Million Munitions Plant in Grayling, Michigan

Saab held a soft grand opening on October 27, 2026 for its new munitions plant in Grayling, Michigan, a more than $115 million investment. Weapon systems for the U.S. Department of Defense will be assembled at the site.
Final assembly, integration and testing
Workers at the plant will handle final assembly, integration and testing of the systems, along with some hardware engineering and software work. Saab chose Grayling in partnership with the Michigan National Guard, home of the Camp Grayling training center.
70+ jobs by full operation
The project has already brought more than 40 workers to the northern Michigan community, and Saab plans to add at least 30 more jobs as production ramps up. The plant is expected to be fully operational by May 2027.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said:
“Michigan has unique strengths that we can contribute to the world when it comes to training, when it comes to testing, when it comes to design and manufacturing. And that’s why you see more defense firms making investments in Michigan.”
Eric Smith, President and CEO of Saab Inc. said:
“It just made a ton of sense when partnering with the National Guard of the state to do here in northern Michigan.”
