Timmerman Power Plant Phase One Goes Live

The Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) has launched Phase One of the Timmerman Power Plant in Maxwell, Texas, marking a significant step in bolstering the state’s energy infrastructure. The natural gas-fueled peaker plant, now connected to the Texas power grid, delivers approximately 190 megawatts of dispatchable electricity, with the full project set to provide 380 megawatts upon completion of Phase Two in 2026. The facility can power over 100,000 homes during peak demand.

Announced on August 20, 2025, the project is the first supported by the Texas Energy Fund to become operational. It is expected to create more than 300 well-paying jobs in the San Marcos area, boosting local economic growth. Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who attended the groundbreaking in April 2024, emphasized its importance: “As our state grows, it is critical that we continue to add reliable, dispatchable power to the grid. The Timmerman Power Plant ensures affordable power for decades, supporting Texas as America’s economic engine.”

LCRA General Manager Phil Wilson highlighted the plant’s rapid response capabilities: “LCRA is proud to bring the first unit of the Timmerman plant online to provide additional reliable power to our growing state. This peaker plant can ramp up in minutes to meet peak demand efficiently.”

Named after LCRA Board Chair Tim Timmerman, the plant underscores LCRA’s commitment to energy security and infrastructure investment, addressing Texas’ rising energy needs driven by population and economic growth.
