U.S. Steel Breaks Ground on $475 Million Quench and Temper Line at Fairfield Tubular in Alabama

U.S. Steel held a ceremonial groundbreaking on September 21, 2026 for a new $475 million Quench and Tempering (Q&T) facility at its Fairfield Tubular Operations near Birmingham, Alabama.
Heat-treated pipe for the energy sector
Quench and tempering is a two-stage heat-treatment process that improves steel strength and durability. The new line will expand the company’s ability to produce high-performance, heat-treated Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) in-house for domestic energy producers.
Modernization projects at Fairfield include the Q&T line, a Premium Thread Line, a new training facility, a warehouse and upgraded employee changing areas. The $75 million Premium Thread Line was announced in November 2025.
250 permanent jobs
The project is expected to create about 250 permanent jobs, including approximately 220 union-represented positions, and support approximately 600 construction jobs at peak. Construction has begun and is expected to be completed in 2029.
David Burritt, President and CEO of U.S. Steel said:
“The new Quench and Temper Line will allow us to produce more of the high-performance tubular products our customers need while creating good-paying jobs here in Fairfield.”
