U.S. Steel Plans $2.5B Mon Valley Hot Strip Mill in Braddock

U.S. Steel released on June 8 an economic impact analysis for its planned capital investment of up to $2.5 billion in Mon Valley Works near Pittsburgh, centered on a new hot strip mill at the Edgar Thomson Plant in Braddock, Pennsylvania.

Replacing an 87-year-old mill

The new hot strip mill will replace an 87-year-old mill at the nearby Irvin Plant, which is slated for decommissioning. It is designed to improve yield, reduce energy consumption and enhance product quality, while expanding the range of steel products for automotive and other high-value markets.

More than double the original commitment

In August 2024, Nippon Steel announced a post-closing capital commitment of no less than $1 billion for Mon Valley Works. Updated projections put the total at approximately $2 billion to $2.5 billion. According to the analysis by Parker Strategy Group, the investment could generate up to $1.7 billion in economic impact, 6,381 jobs and $58 million in state and local tax revenue over three years.

Timeline

According to Manufacturing Dive, construction is set to begin later this year, with production expected in the second half of 2029.

David B. Burritt, President and CEO of U.S. Steel said:

“The Mon Valley Works is where the American steel industry was first forged, and this investment is proof that its best days are still ahead. This investment means thousands of good-paying jobs protected, a world-class facility, and steel that will supply American automakers and manufacturers for generations.”
