Project Type: Production Extension
Ultium Cells to Produce LMR Prismatic Battery Cells in Spring Hill, Tennessee

Ultium Cells, the joint venture of General Motors and LG Energy Solution, announced on September 29, 2026, that it will upgrade its Spring Hill, Tennessee, plant to produce lithium manganese rich (LMR) prismatic battery cells. The facility is expected to be the first in the world to mass produce prismatic LMR cells.
500 new jobs
The expansion is projected to create 500 new jobs in addition to the facility’s current workforce of 1,200 employees. Facility modifications will begin later in 2026 and are expected to be completed in 2028.
$1 billion in combined investment
The upgrade builds on the production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells for energy storage systems, which began at Spring Hill in June 2026. The combined investment for both programs and facility improvements will reach $1 billion by 2030.
Higher energy density
LMR cells are designed to offer 33% greater energy density than LFP chemistry at a comparable cost, supporting GM’s future electric vehicles.
Kurt Kelty, GM vice president of battery and sustainability said:
“Establishing LMR prismatic cell production at Ultium Cells in Spring Hill is a key step in GM’s strategy to match the right battery technology to customer needs and strengthen our leadership in domestic battery manufacturing and innovation.”
Injae Pahk, President of Ultium Cells said:
“This marks Ultium Cells’ second major investment in Spring Hill and reflects the company’s continued growth as a diversified battery cell manufacturer.”
